Freedom Park Association board of directors — Camano Island, WA
Leadership

Board of Directors

Freedom Park Association is governed by a volunteer board of directors drawn from the Camano Island community. These are the people who keep the park running, the lights on, and the mission alive.

Mike Nestor — President, Freedom Park Association

Mike Nestor

President

Mike is a third-generation Camano Islander with roots on the island going back to 1932. He was drafted in 1969 and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in 1973. Since the 1980s, Mike has been an active and committed member of the Camano Island community — and as President of Freedom Park Association, he brings that same lifelong dedication to ensuring this park endures for the generations that follow.

Grant Shaw — Vice President, Freedom Park Association

Grant Shaw

Vice President

Grant Shaw and his wife T'na have called Camano Island home since 1995. He was one of the last volunteers off the site during the original playground build in 2010, and when the park faced foreclosure in 2017, he returned and joined the board that saved it. In the years since, Grant has taken on nearly every major improvement project the park has undertaken — from the Gateway Gallery refurbishment to the playground fence, the west parking lot, and the boardwalk replacement — while managing the park's message board week in and week out. He'll tell you he's just "The Lorax" — he speaks for the park.

Jessica McCready — Secretary, Freedom Park Association

Jessica McCready

Secretary

Jessica serves as Executive Director of the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce, where she leads community engagement, tourism promotion, member support, and signature events that strengthen the Stanwood–Camano area. Her work centers on building connections between local businesses, residents, visitors, and community partners — and she brings that same dedication to her service on the Freedom Park board.

Brandon Ericson — Treasurer, Freedom Park Association

Brandon Ericson

Treasurer

Brandon is a local business owner and Camano Island community member who understands firsthand how much shared spaces matter to families, kids, and neighbors. Through his work at Camano Commons Marketplace and his involvement with local organizations, he has seen the role Freedom Park plays in bringing people together — and he is proud to help keep it a welcoming place to gather, play, and connect.

Chuck Schufreider — Member at Large, Freedom Park Association

Chuck Schufreider

Member at Large

Chuck brings a strong background in parks, recreation, and community service. He holds a degree in Physical Education and Recreation from the University of Washington and served as Camping Director for Seattle Parks, and supported nonprofits through Boeing's Loaned Executive program. Chuck has been connected to Camano since 1959 and has lived here full time for the past nine years. He was part of the original Freedom Park land purchase and construction team, served as a build team leader, and remains a dedicated supporter of the park.

Michelle Huntley — Webmaster, Freedom Park Association

Michelle Huntley

Webmaster

Michelle has been with Freedom Park Association since 2017. She coordinates sign message scheduling, ensuring volunteer crews have everything they need to keep the marquee current and accurate. Michelle also organizes the Stanwood–Camano Pride event and serves as President of PFLAG Stanwood–Camano. By day she works for the Stanwood–Camano School District, and outside of her community work, she's most at home with her family and her goats.

Randy Heagle — Honorary Member, Freedom Park Association

Randy Heagle

Honorary Member

From the very start, Randy Heagle played a role in bringing the Rotary Adventure Playground at Freedom Park to life. As one of the original builders and supporters, he helped shape the park into a place for reflection, remembrance, and community connection. Known for his generous spirit, Randy is deeply rooted in the Stanwood–Camano Island community. His project, Arrowhead Ranch, reflects his passion for creating welcoming spaces where people can gather and belong. His lasting contributions continue to shape Freedom Park and the community he cares so deeply about.
